For you who didn’t know… my mom went to the hospital 2 weeks ago because she couldn’t stand on her left leg and had no movement in her right arm. The doctors didn’t know what the problem was, but before they knew my mom couldn’t move anything and she was not able to breath by herself. They replaced my mom to another hospital, because now the doctor we’re afraid there was something wrong with her brains… Luckily that wasn’t the case. After some tests and a few days later, the doctor told us: It’s Guillain-Barre syndrome. Guillain-Barre syndrome is a rare but serious autoimmune disorder that affects the peripheral nervous system. It is usually caused by an acute infectious process (my mom had pneumonia). The peripheral nervous system is the portion of the nervous system that is outside the brain and spinal cord.
Autoimmune means the patient's immune system goes wrong and attacks good tissue, which in this case are nerve cells which communicate with muscles. The individual with Guillain-Barre syndrome will initially experience a tingly and numbing sensation in the limbs, as well as weakness in the same areas. If these sensations spread, which they often do, the entire body eventually becomes paralyzed. Typically, symptoms start in the lower limbs and eventually spread upwards. My mom can’t breath, talk and move at all and there is still no improvement. Yesterday the doctor told us they think my mom have stay at the Intensive Care for many months till a year, because they never seen someone so badly. It’s very scary feeling not knowing when you’re mom is going to be better. Because my mom can’t speak or move anything, it’s very difficult to communicate or understand her feelings, so it is a very though situation for herself and everybody around her, but together we try to stay strong and positive. She don’t want any other visitors besides us and some family, but she like to have cards… Everybody who already send a card, thank you for the positive vibes!
